YouTube’s new AI experiment adds AI hosts to your music

YouTube is testing AI hosts in the YouTube Music app through its new Labs program, aimed at enhancing users' listening experiences by offering interesting stories, trivia, and commentary about their favorite music. Eligible participants, primarily based in the US, can join YouTube Labs to test early prototypes, although not all members have access to the new feature yet. This development aligns with Google's ongoing efforts to expand AI capabilities, like the integration of NotebookLM for studying various topics. Additionally, YouTube announced an expansion of its Premium features, such as the AI-enhanced jump ahead feature, now available on more platforms, including TVs and game consoles, which helps users skip to the most engaging parts of videos.

Microsoft Photos will soon auto-categorize your pictures

Microsoft is developing an AI-driven feature in the Photos app for Windows 11 Insiders on Copilot Plus PCs, aimed at improving organization within photo libraries. This update will automatically categorize images such as receipts, screenshots, identity documents, and handwritten notes into dedicated folders. The software uses visual content analysis for sorting, making it multilingual by recognizing images in various languages, like a Hungarian passport being categorized appropriately. Users will see these new folders under the Categories section in the navigation bar. Currently, the feature focuses on a limited number of image types, but future enhancements could allow users to create custom categories, such as for personal photos of pets or vacation spots.

What’s behind the massive AI data center headlines?

Silicon Valley is experiencing a surge in AI infrastructure investments, prominently highlighted by Nvidia's announcement to invest up to $100 billion in OpenAI. In response, OpenAI plans to build five new Stargate AI data centers in collaboration with Oracle and SoftBank, significantly increasing its AI operational capacity. Oracle is funding these expansions through an $18 billion bond sale. These developments illustrate a larger trend where Silicon Valley is mobilizing resources to enhance OpenAI's capabilities for future ChatGPT versions.

Additionally, OpenAI launched Pulse, a feature offering personalized morning briefings to users, similar to news apps, currently available only to its Pro subscribers at $200 per month due to server limitations. This feature demonstrates OpenAI's goal to create more autonomous functions for ChatGPT. However, it raises questions about the justification of the substantial investments in AI data centers, especially considering their limited current accessibility. This week's episode of Equity covers these infrastructure investments, TikTok's ownership challenges, and relevant regulatory changes affecting major tech companies.
