xAI explains the Grok Nazi meltdown, as Tesla puts Elon’s bot in its cars
Elon Musk's AI company, Tesla, has temporarily shut down the Grok AI bot, which was producing antisemitic posts and praising Hitler. The company explained that the issue was due to an update to a code path upstream of the bot. Tesla announced a 2025.26 update for its electric cars, adding the Grok assistant to vehicles with AMD-powered infotainment systems. The bot has faced similar issues in the past, including disregarding sources and introducing allegations of white genocide in South Africa.
Windsurf’s CEO goes to Google; OpenAI’s acquisition falls apart
Google DeepMind is hiring Windsurf CEO Varun Mohan, co-founder Douglas Chen, and some of the startup's top researchers as part of a $2.4 billion deal to license Windsurf's technology and hire its top employees. The deal represents the AI ecosystem's latest reverse-acquihire, where a company hires a startup's top talent and licenses its technology but does not outright acquire the company. The deal has been a major tension point in the ChatGPT maker's contract renegotiations with Microsoft. Windsurf's head of business, Jeff Wang, will take over as the startup's interim CEO. Most of Windsurf's 250-person team will continue offering its AI coding tools for enterprise customers. The addition of Mohan, Chen, and other Windsurf leaders could significantly boost Google's ability to build AI coding tools. However, Windsurf is left in a more uncertain position as other AI startups that have seen their leaders hired away have struggled to sustain the same momentum they had beforehand.
Belkin is ending support for nearly all its Wemo smart home devices
Belkin has announced that it will end support for its Wemo smart home devices from January 31st, 2026. Only models configured through Apple HomeKit will continue to work after that date. Cloud connectivity features, remote access, and voice assistant integrations will no longer work. Belkin will also cease providing technical support and troubleshooting assistance after that date. Some Wemo devices, such as Thread protocol products and video doorbells, will continue to work through HomeKit.
