Wiz chief technologist Ami Luttwak on how AI is transforming cyberattacks
Ami Luttwak, chief technologist at Wiz, discussed the impacts of AI on cybersecurity during a TechCrunch Equity podcast. He pointed out that increased AI adoption in companies expands their attack surfaces due to insecure coding practices. While AI improves coding efficiency, it heightens the risk of errors, particularly in authentication, leaving systems vulnerable to exploitation. Luttwak noted that both developers and attackers leverage AI; for instance, attackers use it to infiltrate systems and reverse-engineer access keys. He cited the Drift breach as a case illustrating the vulnerabilities due to insecure AI integration.
Despite only about 1% of enterprises fully adopting AI, Luttwak warned of the growing sophistication of AI-related attacks, referencing the "s1ingularity" attack on Nx that exploited a JavaScript framework. Wiz has adapted its focus from identifying security weaknesses to countering AI-facilitated attacks, launching products like Wiz Code and Wiz Defend. Luttwak advises startups to integrate security from the beginning by appointing a CISO, implementing robust security protocols, and achieving compliance with frameworks like SOC2 to ensure scalability and address security challenges effectively.
Beware coworkers who produce AI-generated ‘workslop’
Researchers at BetterUp Labs, alongside Stanford Social Media Lab, have introduced the term "workslop" to describe low-quality, AI-generated content that pretends to be effective but lacks the depth needed to fulfill a task effectively. In a Harvard Business Review article, they assert that workslop may explain why 95% of organizations investing in AI report no return on investment. Workslop can be characterized as unhelpful, incomplete, or lacking essential context, consequently adding to the workload of others who must interpret, correct, or redo this subpar work. A survey involving 1,150 full-time U.S. employees revealed that 40% had encountered workslop in the previous month. To combat this issue, the researchers recommend that workplace leaders demonstrate purposeful AI use and establish clear guidelines regarding norms and acceptable practices in the workplace.
Meta AI funnels AI videos from creators into new ‘Vibes’ feed
On Thursday, Meta AI introduced a new feature called Vibes, a feed dedicated to short-form, AI-generated videos. This platform encourages users to remix videos produced by "creators and communities" and allows them to share their own AI-generated content, which can also be cross-posted across Meta’s various platforms for visibility among friends and followers. While AI-generated content is prevalent across many arenas, Vibes is exclusive to the Meta AI app. This new feed takes the place of the earlier Discover feed, which focused on sharing users' prompts and interactions with Meta AI. Connor Hayes, Meta's VP of product, explained that the feed aims to demonstrate the creative potential of AI to users.
