Why is an Amazon-backed AI startup making Orson Welles fan fiction?

Fable, a startup that claims to be the "Netflix of AI," is set to recreate Orson Welles' classic film "The Magnificent Ambersons" using an AI model. Filmmaker Brian Rose, who has spent five years digitally reconstructing Welles' original vision, plans to use this model to recreate lost footage from the film over the next two years. However, Fable has not obtained the film's rights, making this a potential tech demo that may never be released to the public. The project is described as a hybrid of AI and traditional filmmaking, with some scenes reshot with contemporary actors whose faces will be swapped for digital recreations of the original cast. Despite the absurdity of announcing this project without the film rights or the blessing of Welles' daughter, Rose seems motivated by a genuine desire to honor Welles' vision. The final product will not be Welles' version of "The Magnificent Ambersons" that RKO destroyed over 80 years ago.

At the IFA event in Berlin, NexLawn, a sub-brand of MOVA, announced the Master X Series Concept, the first robotic lawnmower with a fully functional mechanical arm. The arm is designed to reduce manual maintenance for owners, such as picking up fallen sticks or debris. The arm can reach up to one meter away and features multiple interchangeable arm attachments, including a multi-gripper, trimmer head, and edging disc head. The Master X Series Concept is capable of tasks such as trimming, weeding, fruit picking, and even pet interaction. The "Concept" name suggests it isn't a consumer-ready product, but NexLawn hasn't mentioned a price or release timeline, so any potential launch is likely a ways off.

Mistral AI, a French tech startup, is raising another round valued at $14 billion, aiming to compete with OpenAI. The company, which offers open-source AI models, has raised significant funding since its creation in 2023. In July 2025, Mistral AI updated Le Chat with new features, including a "deep research" mode, native multilingual reasoning, advanced image editing, Projects, which allows users to group chats, documents, and ideas into focused spaces, and Memories, which allows users to remember previous conversations. The company's goal is to make frontier AI accessible to everyone, contrasting OpenAI's typically closed approach.
