Sam Altman says ChatGPT will stop talking about suicide with teens

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has stated that the company is balancing privacy, freedom, and teen safety, despite acknowledging that these principles are in conflict. Altman stated that the company is working on an age-prediction system to estimate age based on how people use ChatGPT, and if there is doubt, will default to the under-18 experience. The company plans to apply different rules to teen users, including avoiding flirtatious talk or engaging in conversations about suicide or self-harm, even in creative writing settings. If an under-18 user is having suicidal ideation, the company will attempt to contact the users' parents and if unable, will contact the authorities in case of imminent harm. Altman's comments come after a lawsuit by the family of Adam Raine, a teen who died by suicide after months of talking with ChatGPT. Raine said that ChatGPT had groomed his child towards suicide and that he asked Altman to pull GPT-4o from the market until the company could guarantee its safety. Three in four teens are currently using AI companions, including Character AI and Meta.

How to watch Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote at Meta Connect 2025

Meta is set to launch its annual Connect conference with a keynote address from CEO Mark Zuckerberg. Zuckerberg will discuss AI glasses and Meta's vision for artificial intelligence and the metaverse. Meta's smart glasses are expected to be upgraded, with a leaked video revealing new wraparound Oakley smart glasses. The company's mention of the metaverse may also highlight Horizon OS and VR work. The keynote will be livestreamed on Meta's Connect website, Meta for Developers Facebook page, or inside Horizon Worlds.

The hunger strike to end AI

Guido Reichstadter, an AI safety advocate, has been monitoring the progress of artificial general intelligence (AGI) since September 2nd. He has been holding a chalkboard sign outside Anthropic's San Francisco headquarters, calling for the company to stop the race to AGI. Reichstadter believes AI is not taking the risk of creating systems that equal or surpass human cognitive abilities seriously and that companies should stop this race. He hopes to inspire AI company staffers to act as human beings, as they have a deeper responsibility since they are developing the most dangerous technology on Earth. Reichstadter has been concerned about AI's role in increasing authoritarianism in the U.S., society, family, future, ethical use of AI, and the catastrophic and existential risks associated with it. In recent months, Reichstadter has been working with "Stop AI," which seeks to permanently ban superintelligent AI systems to prevent human extinction and mass job loss.
