Sam Altman and Jony Ive’s secret device won’t be ‘your weird AI girlfriend’

OpenAI and Jony Ive are working on an AI gadget designed to be palm-sized and screenless, focusing on its personality and interaction frequency. Set to launch between late 2026 and early 2027, the device aims to provide an accessible experience similar to Siri, featuring microphones, speakers, and cameras for communication. Key challenges include refining the device's conversational methods and addressing privacy issues related to constant listening, as well as acquiring sufficient computing power in contrast to competitors like Amazon and Google.

Fictional characters are (officially) coming to Sora as OpenAI manages copyright chaos

OpenAI's Sora team, led by Bill Peebles, is planning to introduce collaborations with fictional characters in videos, a move aimed at mitigating unauthorized content. CEO Sam Altman noted that this will allow for sanctioned cameos of copyrighted characters. The company is shifting from an opt-out to an opt-in copyright model, providing rightsholders with more control and the opportunity for revenue sharing, which is expected to begin soon. Altman mentioned that establishing the payment structure will require experimentation.

Sora provides better control over videos featuring your AI self

Sora has introduced new features allowing users to control the use of their AI-generated doubles on the app, as part of updates aimed at stabilizing the platform amidst growing concerns over misinformation from AI content. Dubbed “TikTok for deepfakes,” Sora enables the creation of short videos using these virtual appearances, termed “cameos.” Users can now restrict their AI selves from being featured in politically related content or from saying specific words. The app also permits customization of virtual representations, such as wearing designated apparel. Despite these safeguards, there are concerns they might not be sufficient, given the history of breaches in AI systems, as demonstrated by incidents related to AI models providing harmful information. OpenAI’s staff acknowledged the need for ongoing enhancement of safety features, including watermarking. Notably, the app has already faced challenges, with high-profile figures like OpenAI CEO Sam Altman appearing in various unflattering deepfake videos, which highlights the potential risks of unrestricted AI-generated content.
