Rolling Stone’s parent company sues Google over AI Overviews
Penske Media Corporation, the publisher of Rolling Stone and The Hollywood Reporter, has become the first major American media company to sue Google over its AI summaries. The company claims that the AI Overviews at the top of search results leave users with little reason to click through to the source, hurting traffic and illegally benefiting from the work of its reporters. Penske and other publishers claim that there is little reason to follow the links provided in search results, leading to significant drops in traffic and revenue. Google spokesperson José Castañeda defended the summaries, but Penske and other publishers argue that there is no reason to follow the links provided in search results, resulting in significant drops in affiliate links revenue. The company also faces the challenge of blocking Google from indexing its content or continuing to provide training material for its AI. This is just the latest battle between AI companies and content creators.
Here’s why usage of Gemini’s Nano Banana image editor is growing
Google Gemini, an AI-generated figurine app, has gained popularity due to its Nano Banana image editor and the viral trend of 3D figurines. Launched in late August, the app allows users to transform images in various ways, including redecorating their house, giving themselves a '60s beehive, and putting a tutu on their chihuahua. The app has added 23 million users in two weeks and transformed 500 million images. Gemini is currently the leading iPhone app on Apple's App Stores in the US, UK, Canada, France, Australia, Germany, and Italy, surpassing OpenAI's ChatGPT. In September, Google Labs vice president Josh Woodward announced that temporary limits on usage would be implemented to manage extreme demand. The app's popularity is driven by Nano Banana, which allows users to turn themselves or their pets into 3D figurines. Despite some issues, Nano Banana's editing capabilities are entertaining enough to earn its time in the spotlight and may spawn new viral trends before a better model takes its place.
OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor says we’re in an AI bubble (but that’s okay)
Bret Taylor, board chair at OpenAI and CEO of Sierra, has echoed OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's warning that AI will lead to significant financial losses. Taylor believes that AI will transform the economy and create significant economic value, similar to the internet. He also believes that we are in an AI bubble, with many people likely to lose money. Taylor compared the current AI landscape to the dot-com bubble of the late '90s, arguing that while many companies failed, the people in 1999 were somewhat right. He believes that both are true at the same time, and there is historical precedent for both.
