OpenAI’s parental controls are out here’s what you should know
OpenAI has introduced new parental controls for ChatGPT for web users, with mobile access forthcoming. These controls allow parents to restrict certain content types, including sexual roleplay and image generation, while managing ChatGPT's memory of conversations. Parents and teens must have separate accounts, with teens needing to consent to linking accounts, which they can disconnect from at any time. Key features include automatic content exposure reductions, the ability to disable ChatGPT's memory, and options for preventing data use in model training, setting quiet hours, disabling voice interactions, and restricting image generation. Parents can also receive notifications for concerning situations.
These measures come in the wake of the suicide of 16-year-old Adam Raine, prompting scrutiny regarding AI chatbot safety and legislative discussions on its effects on youth. OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, acknowledged the difficulty of balancing safety with privacy, while Matthew Raine, Adam’s father, criticized previous safety measures during Senate hearings, highlighting the need for better protections for users.
Microsoft launches ‘vibe working’ in Excel and Word
Microsoft is introducing Agent Mode in its Office applications, specifically Excel and Word, under its Microsoft 365 Copilot initiative. This feature leverages OpenAI's GPT-5 model to allow users to create sophisticated documents and spreadsheets using simple prompts, enhancing productivity by breaking down complex tasks. Sumit Chauhan from Microsoft's Office Product Group states that Agent Mode aims to provide board-ready presentations akin to those produced by first-year consultants while ensuring outputs remain auditable and verifiable to maintain data integrity.
The technology has demonstrated a 57.2% accuracy rate in SpreadsheetBench testing, although it is below the human benchmark of 71.3%. However, it outperforms other AI models like Shortcut.ai and ChatGPT in handling .xlsx files. In Word, Agent Mode introduces 'vibe writing', transforming document creation into a conversational process that fosters ongoing dialogue.
Additionally, Microsoft is introducing Office Agent within Copilot chat, an AI chatbot utilizing Anthropic models to generate entire PowerPoint presentations and Word documents based on chat prompts. This feature aims to enhance the organization and structure of AI-generated presentations, integrating real-time web-based research. These innovations aim to strengthen Microsoft's competitiveness in the productivity software market amid a rise in AI tool offerings.
Complex Chaos thinks AI can help people find common ground
Making democracy effective encounters significant challenges, exacerbated by global events. The startup Complex Chaos aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to enhance understanding and consensus rather than deepen divisions. Co-founder Tommy Lorsch highlighted that users often request AI to simplify complex issues, indicating its potential to improve dialogue among diverse groups. Their tools, focusing initially on climate negotiations, are designed to facilitate cooperation, with an eye on addressing the limitations of traditional collaborative methods that struggle to scale effectively across time zones.
Inspired by Google's Habermas Machine, their AI tool aids delegates in generating questions, setting discussion goals, and summarizing intricate documents, as evidenced during trials with young delegates from nine African nations at UN climate negotiations in Bonn. Results showed a 60% reduction in coordination time and a 91% rate of users discovering new perspectives. The startup is targeting corporations with lengthy strategic planning processes, promoting its technology as a means to enhance negotiation efficacy and deliver significant benefits for climate initiatives and broader sustainability challenges.
