OpenAI launches ChatGPT Pulse to proactively write you morning briefs

OpenAI has introduced Pulse, a new feature in ChatGPT, which generates personalized daily reports for users, enhancing their morning routines with five to ten briefs. This feature marks a shift in intention, presenting ChatGPT as a more proactive assistant rather than a mere chatbot. The CEO of Applications, Fidji Simo, states that Pulse is aimed at democratizing support previously available only to affluent users, initially for Pro plan subscribers. Pulse will offer varied report topics and utilize historical chat data for context, while limiting user interaction to reduce engagement similar to social media.

Pulse also integrates with Google Calendar and Gmail to summarize emails and help with agenda creation. Although competition with news services like Apple News is expected, OpenAI reassures users that Pulse will not replace these apps. Nonetheless, concerns persist regarding its computational costs and overall effectiveness, with plans to enhance its capabilities for task automation in the future while addressing the need for established user trust.

Gemini now explains why your Sheets formula failed

Nine months after its integration into Google Sheets, Google's Gemini AI has received enhancements including formula assistance for data manipulation. The AI chatbot, which appears alongside the spreadsheet, offers suggested formulas, step-by-step guidance, and troubleshooting explanations. This new feature addresses common challenges encountered with functions like COUNTIF and COUNTIFS.

In practical testing with a chaotic wedding guest list, Gemini initially suggested a COUNTIF formula to count guests who accepted invitations but highlighted that no positive RSVPs had been recorded, revealing missing data.

Further challenges arose when the user sought to calculate the total distance from guest addresses. Gemini clarified its limitations, stating it couldn't directly compute distances but could suggest methods, such as a custom script requiring API skills or a simplified formula using the Haversine formula for straight-line distances. The user received a tailored Haversine formula for Google Sheets, which needed adjustments for accuracy. Despite difficulties in obtaining coordinates for multiple addresses, the user was appreciative of Gemini's support, recognizing its potential to simplify complex data tasks.

How developers are using Apple’s local AI models with iOS 26

In 2025, Apple introduced its Foundation Models framework during WWDC, enabling developers to leverage local AI models in their applications without incurring inference costs. These models, featuring guided generation and tool calling, are being integrated as iOS 26 is rolled out. While smaller than those from major competitors like OpenAI or Google, Apple's local models enhance app usability rather than significantly altering workflows.

Several apps have begun to utilize Apple's AI framework. The Lil Artist app now includes an AI story creator that generates stories based on user-selected characters and themes, powered by the local model. In the Daylish app, the developer is prototyping a feature that suggests emojis based on event titles for a daily planner. Additionally, the finance app MoneyCoach benefits from two new features: providing insights into spending patterns and automatically suggesting categories for quick expense entries.
