Meet R1, a Chinese tech giant’s rival to Tesla’s Optimus robot
Chinese tech giant Ant Group has showcased its first humanoid robot, Robbyant, at tech conferences. The robot, also known as Shanghai Ant Lingbo Technology Co., is reportedly testing its capabilities in community centers and restaurants. The company, which owns Alipay payment platform, has been promoting its R1 robot at the IFA 2025 tech show in Berlin and the 2025 Inclusion Conference in Shanghai. The robot could be used as a companion or caregiver in healthcare or as a robotic tour guide in the travel industry. Ant Group is also testing the bot in community centers and restaurants. While claims of R1's performance are skeptical until it can be seen acting in the real world, Ant Group is doubling down on AI-powered robotics, a field that has faced slow progress and hyped-up promises.
Larry Ellison usurps Elon Musk as the world’s richest person
Elon Musk is no longer the world's richest man, as Larry Ellison's net worth has increased by $101 billion to $393 billion, according to Bloomberg. Ellison's wealth now surpasses Musk's at $385 billion. Musk first topped the list in 2021 but lost the title to Jeff Bezos and LVMH CEO Bernard Arnault. Ellison's fortune soared after Oracle's earnings report suggested its cloud infrastructure business would generate $144 billion over the next four years. Musk may become the world's first trillionaire if Tesla shareholders approve his exorbitant new pay package.
Sega reportedly called police after mistakenly scrapping Nintendo dev kits
A UK-based video game reseller claims that Sega was involved in a police raid that seized a collection of Nintendo development kits from his home. The seller, who purchased the rare finds for around £10,000, claims that Sega got the police involved to recover the dev kits after mistakenly throwing them out. The seller purchased the collection from a scrapyard and was arrested on July 14th, three months after the purchase. The seller was arrested for money laundering and was asked to sign a "formal disclaimer request" to relinquish ownership of the dev kits. Despite six pre-action protocol claims, the seller has not heard back from the police or Sega. The rare consoles are still in the hands of the police, and it is unclear whether they will ever see the light of day, sparking frustration from the video game preservation community.
