IBM and ESA Launch TerraMind AI for Earth Observation

IBM and the European Space Agency have launched TerraMind, an open-source AI system for advanced Earth observation. The multimodal model outperformed 12 leading AI models on the PANGAEA benchmark by 8% or more. TerraMind uses a novel "symmetric transformer-based encoder-decoder architecture" and handles nine data modalities, including satellite imagery, climate records, and vegetation maps. Despite training on over 500 billion tokens, it requires 10 times fewer computing resources than existing models. The system can tackle environmental challenges like natural disaster management and climate change tracking in real-time using space-based data.

Trump Administration Issues New AI Policies

The Trump Administration has introduced comprehensive AI policies, requiring government contractors to adhere to strict compliance requirements for high-impact AI use cases. These include pre-deployment testing, impact assessments, and continuous monitoring. The policies prioritize American-made AI systems, giving the US a competitive edge in government procurement. Contractors must navigate complex intellectual property and data rights clauses to ensure transparency, portability, and government access to data without vendor lock-in. The initiative, including Memorandum M-25-22, aims to promote AI use while maintaining safety, security, and public trust.

AI Chip Manufacturing Derails Climate Progress in East Asia

A Greenpeace East Asia report reveals significant environmental impacts from AI chip manufacturing, with electricity consumption rates increasing by 350% since 2023. Taiwan and South Korea are the main hubs, with the combined emissions potentially causing the Asia Pacific region to miss environmental sustainability targets. Electricity consumption for AI chip manufacturing is projected to increase 170% by the end of the decade, potentially matching Ireland's total electricity usage. Countries are building new LNG plants to support the semiconductor and AI industries, with Taiwan leading this expansion. The report emphasizes the urgent need for renewable energy alternatives in chip manufacturing.

Meta Releases Multimodal Llama 4 with Industry-Leading Capabilities

Meta has introduced its latest AI models, Llama 4 Scout and Llama 4 Maverick. Scout, with 17 billion active parameters and 16 experts, outperforms Gemma 3, Gemini 2.0 Flash-Lite, and Mistral 3.1 on standard benchmarks. Maverick, with 17 billion active parameters but 128 experts, offers best-in-class image grounding and surpasses GPT-4o and Gemini 2.0 Flash on various benchmarks. It achieves comparable results to DeepSeek v3 on reasoning and coding with half the active parameters and has an exceptional performance-to-cost ratio. Both models were derived from Llama 4 Behemoth, Meta's most powerful model still in training.

ChatGPT Sees 30% Revenue Surge from Anime Trend to Enterprise Adoption

ChatGPT's subscription revenue has risen by 30% in just three months, driven by viral consumer trends and enterprise adoption. The surge began in March when millions of users tried OpenAI's new image generator, sparked by a social media craze for converting photos into Studio Ghibli animation styles. ChatGPT has now reached 20 million paying subscribers, an increase of about 4.5 million since late last year, putting the company on a $5 billion annual revenue run-rate. The "Ghiblification" trend drove initial growth, but sustained revenue comes from workers incorporating ChatGPT into their professional workflows.
