Grok’s AI companions drove downloads, but its latest model is the one making money
Grok 4, a new AI model launched by Elon Musk's xAI, has been driving the app's revenue. By July 11, Grok's gross revenue on iOS had risen 325% to $419,000, up from $99,000 the day before the launch. Daily downloads of the Grok iOS app had increased 279% to 197,000 by July 11, up from 52,000 before the launch. However, the addition of Grok's AI companions on July 14 had less pronounced impact on downloads and revenue. Grok's iOS downloads globally were up 40% the day after the companions launched, reaching 171,000 daily installs, but revenue increased just 9% to $337,000. The company also announced a $300-per-month subscription called SuperGrok Heavy, offering early access to Grok 4 Heavy and other new features. Interest in the new model drove Grok's ranking on the U.S. App Store, making it the No. 3 top app overall and No. 2 in the Productivity category by July 12.
Meta snubs the EU’s voluntary AI guidelines
Meta has refused to sign the European Union's artificial intelligence code of practice agreement, citing concerns that the EU is heading down the wrong path on AI. The code, published on July 10th, is a voluntary set of guidelines to help companies follow the AI Act's rules around general-purpose AI. Meta's global affairs chief, Joel Kaplan, said the code introduces legal uncertainties for model developers and measures that go beyond the scope of the AI Act. The EU claims that general-purpose AI model providers who sign the code will benefit from a reduced administrative burden and increased legal certainty. Meta's refusal to sign the EU's code is not surprising, given the company's history of fines and aligning with the Trump administration's lax views on tech regulations.
