Google’s AI Mode image search is getting more conversational
Google has updated its AI Mode to enhance image searching through conversational descriptions, allowing users to describe products naturally rather than through traditional filters such as color, size, or brand. This update enables vague search prompts, which users can refine intuitively— for instance, starting with "barrel jeans that aren’t too baggy" and adjusting queries like "I want more ankle length." AI Mode also supports searches using reference images for finding visually similar products, which is beneficial for broader visual exploration, including areas like interior design. This rollout, initially available in English to U.S. users, incorporates features from Google Lens and advanced multimodal processing from Gemini 2.5, enhancing the recognition of intricate image details for nuanced search results. Users may experience a gradual availability of these features over the coming days.

Nothing has introduced Playground, an innovative app store for user-designed, AI-generated apps, rooted in Android, marking a significant step towards a more personalized smartphone experience. Central to the offering is Essential, Nothing's suite of AI tools, which includes an AI search utility and Essential Space for managing notes and media. Essential Apps, the key feature of Playground, enables users to develop apps through AI-assisted prompts, currently limited to widget design and facilitated via a web interface. Users can deploy their creations on compatible devices, primarily Nothing phones, with exceptions for the Phone 1.
CEO Carl Pei envisions that future app creation will become more user-friendly and intuitive, potentially incorporating voice commands, and progressing towards full-screen applications. He believes the platform could spark a new economy for creators, allowing app remixing, yet acknowledges that monetization strategies are not in place yet. Pei draws comparisons to YouTube for future monetization opportunities and reiterates that, while Playground aims to enhance app suggestions and organization aligned with the AI-native OS vision, it remains an interface dependent on Google’s Android system.
Google Drive adds AI to detect ransomware before it spreads
Google Drive for desktop introduces a ransomware detection feature powered by an AI model trained on millions of real-world ransomware samples. This model identifies signals indicating that a file has been maliciously modified. When the AI detects potential ransomware activity—such as bulk file encryption or corruption—on Windows or macOS systems, it automatically halts the syncing of Drive files, notifies users via desktop alerts and email, and enables file restoration to previous versions. Luke Camery of Google announced that this feature will begin rolling out in open beta today, with plans to make it generally available by year-end. The specialized AI model adapts to new ransomware threats by continuously monitoring file alterations and integrating new insights from VirusTotal. This proactive measure aims to prevent extensive data corruption and mitigate work disruptions within organizations. Ransomware attacks remain a growing concern, with the Office of the Director of National Intelligence reporting 5,289 incidents globally in 2024, marking a 15 percent increase compared to 2023.
