Google Gemini’s AI image model gets a ‘bananas’ upgrade
Google is introducing a new AI image model called Gemini 2.5 Flash Image, which allows users to fine-tune their editing of photos. The update, which is available to all users in the Gemini app and developers via the Gemini API, Google AI Studio, and Vertex AI platforms, aims to catch up with OpenAI's popular image tools and attract users from ChatGPT. The new AI image model is designed to make precise edits to images based on natural language requests from users while preserving the consistency of faces, animals, and other details. Google's new tool has already gained attention, with social media users raving over an impressive AI image editor in the crowdsourced evaluation platform, LMArena. However, Google has safeguards in place to limit what users can create, such as prohibiting non-consensual intimate imagery. To address the rise of deepfake imagery, Google applies visual watermarks to AI-generated images and identifiers in its metadata.
Google is building a Duolingo rival into the Translate app
Google is introducing AI-powered language learning tools into its Translate app, which can create customized lessons based on a user's skill level and purpose for learning a new language. Currently, Google Translate can only help English speakers practice Spanish and French, as well as Spanish, French, and Portuguese speakers practice English. Users can select their skill level and goal, and choose from preset scenarios for professional conversations, everyday interactions, and talking with friends and family. Google uses its Gemini AI models to generate lessons based on the user's response. The setup is similar to Duolingo, which also tailors lesson plans based on skill level and goals. Google has also launched a live translation feature in the Translate app, allowing users to have back-and-forth conversations with someone even if they don't speak the same language. Live translation is available in the US, India, and Mexico, and works in more than 70 languages, including Arabic, French, Hindi, Korean, Spanish, and Tamil.
Parents sue OpenAI over ChatGPT’s role in son’s suicide
Adam Raine, who died by suicide after consulting AI chatbot ChatGPT, has filed the first known wrongful death lawsuit against OpenAI. Research shows that safety features in AI chatbots are not foolproof, and Raine bypassed these guardrails by asking about suicide methods for a fictional story. OpenAI has acknowledged these shortcomings, but acknowledged the limitations of existing safety training for large models. Other AI chatbot makers, such as Character.AI, are also facing lawsuits for their role in suicides and AI-related delusions.
