Gemini is coming, Google TV starting today
Google has added Gemini to its Google TV platform, starting with TCL's QM9K series TVs and expanding to other TVs and streaming boxes later this year. Gemini will carry on basic commands like playing a specific show when asked and allow users to have "free-flowing conversations" with the AI-powered assistant. Users can find shows based on specific details or vague descriptions, or request a recap if they're a few episodes behind on a series they're watching. Google suggests asking the assistant for TV show recommendations with prompts that include everyone's genre preferences or for suggestions based on what shows are currently trending. Gemini will also provide text responses that are read aloud, along with suggestions for related YouTube videos. Google has confirmed later availability for the Google TV Streamer 4K, Walmart Onn 4K Pro, and several 2025 models of Hisense and TCL TVs. Samsung and LG will also bring Microsoft's Copilot AI assistant to new models of their smart TVs at CES 2025.
Record labels claim AI generator Suno illegally ripped their songs from YouTube
Major record labels have escalated their lawsuit against AI startup Suno, alleging that it knowingly pirated songs from YouTube to train its generative AI music models. The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) accuses Suno of unlawfully "stream ripping" tracks on YouTube and circumventing measures designed to prevent unauthorized copying. The updated complaint alleges that Suno used code to access, extract, copy, and download copyrighted works from Universal, Sony, and Warner, violating YouTube's terms of service by circumventing the platform's "rolling cipher" encryption. This circumvention has facilitated Suno's ongoing and mass-scale infringement and violates the anti-circumvention provisions of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA). Suno has not made its training datasets public and is vague about how the data was acquired. The RIAA is now seeking $2,500 in statutory damages for each act of circumvention, alongside up to $150,000 per work infringed.
Silicon Valley bets big on ‘environments’ to train AI agents
AI agents, like OpenAI's ChatGPT Agent and Perplexity's Comet, are praised for their autonomous task completion capabilities. However, the technology remains limited, and the industry is still discovering new techniques to make AI agents more robust. Reinforcement learning (RL) environments are becoming a critical element in the development of agents, similar to how labeled datasets powered the last wave of AI. Startups like Mechanize and Prime Intellect are leading the space, while large data-labeling companies like Mercor and Surge are investing more in RL environments to keep pace with the industry's shift from static datasets to interactive simulations. Major labs are also considering investing heavily, with Anthropic leaders discussing spending over $1 billion on RL environments over the next year.
