Eight Sleep raises $100M to expand its AI-powered sleep tech

Eight Sleep, a New York-based startup, has raised a $100 million round to transform its smart mattresses into preventive health devices. The company, founded in 2014, offers AI-powered sleep tech products that can track and enhance sleep quality. The flagship product, the Pod, measures sleep stages, heart rate, breathing patterns, and movement, automatically adjusting temperature, elevation, and firmness. Eight Sleep has generated over $500 million in Pod sales and collected insights from over one billion hours of recorded sleep data. The company is now expanding beyond the Pod with its Sleep Agent, an AI-driven system that leverages large language models to create thousands of digital twins for each user and predict outcomes. The company plans to use the new funding to accelerate its growth in the medical sector, building on the Pod's health-monitoring capabilities. Eight Sleep currently ships to over 30 countries and is planning to expand into China. The company complies with each locale's regulations, including for data storage, and uses biometric sensors embedded in the bed surface for passive, high-accuracy insights.

Microsoft Excel adds Copilot AI to help fill in spreadsheet cells

Microsoft Excel is testing an AI-powered function called "COPILOT" that can automatically fill cells in spreadsheets, similar to Google Sheets' feature. The function uses a natural language prompt and can classify information, generate summaries, create tables, and more. The COPILOT function can classify feedback about a coffee machine, but has limitations, such as not accessing information outside the spreadsheet, and can only calculate 100 functions every 10 minutes. Microsoft warns against using it for numerical calculations or in high-stakes scenarios with legal, regulatory, and compliance implications. The feature is now available in the Beta Channel on Windows and Mac with a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.

Microsoft is finally improving Windows 11’s dark mode

Microsoft has introduced a dark mode option in Windows 10 in 2016, but there are still areas with a mix of light and dark modes. The latest preview build of Windows 11 now includes more darkened UI elements, including updated file operation dialogs with a dark theme. However, the buttons on these prompts still have light buttons. Microsoft hasn't officially announced any improvements to its Windows 11 dark mode, but these small changes could indicate a broader overhaul in time for the 25H2 update later this year. Microsoft has taken a few years to add a dark mode to File Explorer in Windows 10, and Apple has a consistent dark mode in macOS since 2018.
