Billionaire Ambani taps Google, Meta to build India’s AI backbone

India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, has launched Reliance Intelligence, a subsidiary of Reliance Industries, to build the country's AI backbone. The venture aims to create a national-scale AI infrastructure, including enterprise tools and services for various sectors. Reliance has partnered with Google Cloud to build a dedicated AI cloud infrastructure in India, starting with a major data center in Jamnagar. Reliance has also announced a joint venture with Meta, a major tech investor, to build and scale enterprise AI solutions for customers in India and select international markets. The company plans to expand beyond India and take its flagship subsidiary, Reliance Jio Platforms, to international markets. Reliance is also reportedly eyeing a partnership with OpenAI, which recently introduced its sub-$5 ChatGPT subscription in India.

Microsoft AI launches its first in-house models

Microsoft has introduced its first AI models, MAI-Voice-1 AI and MAI-1-preview, which can generate audio in under one second on a single GPU. The MAI-Voice-1 speech model is already used in Copilot Daily and podcast-style discussions. MAI-1-preview, trained on around 15,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs, is designed for users who need an AI model capable of following instructions and providing helpful responses to everyday queries. Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman emphasized that the company's internal AI models are not focused on enterprise use cases but on creating models that work well for the consumer companion. The company plans to roll out MAI-1-preview for certain text use cases in its Copilot AI assistant, which currently relies on OpenAI's large language models. Microsoft AI has also started publicly testing its MAI-1-preview model on the AI benchmarking platform LMArena.

ChatGPT: Everything you need to know about the AI-powered chatbot

ChatGPT, OpenAI's text-generating AI chatbot, has gained popularity since its launch in November 2022. The bot has 300 million weekly active users. In 2024, OpenAI collaborated with Apple for Apple Intelligence, released GPT-4o with voice capabilities, and launched Sora, a text-to-video model. However, the company faced internal drama, including the departures of high-level executives and lawsuits from Alden Global Capital-owned newspapers. In 2025, OpenAI is battling the perception of losing ground to Chinese rivals like DeepSeek. The company is pursuing a data center project and laying the groundwork for one of the largest funding rounds in history.
