Amazon says its AI will let NBA fans track brand-new stats
New analytics for the 2025–2026 NBA season will be powered by Amazon Web Services (AWS) through the “NBA Inside the Game” platform. It will track detailed player metrics by monitoring 29 undisclosed body parts, emphasizing shot difficulty with metrics like Expected Field Goal Percentage based on shooter orientation and defender positions. A new metric, Gravity, will assess players' advantages on the court via movement analysis. The Defensive Score Box will offer a detailed evaluation of defensive contributions beyond traditional statistics. Fans can access these analytics during live broadcasts and on the NBA app and website, furthering the NBA's partnership with AWS from a 2024 media rights agreement.
OpenAI’s Sosa soars to No. 3 on the US App Store
OpenAI's Sora app has quickly gained popularity, achieving 56,000 downloads on its first day and reaching a total of 164,000 installs within its initial two days, ranking as the No. 3 app on the U.S. App Store despite being invite-only and limited to users in the U.S. and Canada at launch. This initial performance surpasses other major AI app launches, such as Anthropic's Claude and Microsoft's Copilot, although it falls short of OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini, which had over 80,000 downloads on their launch days. Critics argue that the invite-only nature of Sora may skew these comparisons, suggesting greater demand for AI video tools in a social networking context. This demand comes amid some internal contention at OpenAI, highlighting differing priorities within the company regarding AI's role in society. To provide a clearer comparison against other AI applications, Appfigures analyzed downloads solely from the U.S. and Canada, recognizing that various apps have employed different geographical launch tactics.
Google’s Jules enters developers’ toolchains as AI coding agent competition heats up
Google has enhanced its AI coding agent, Jules, by introducing a new command-line interface (CLI) and a public API, enabling developers to integrate Jules into their workflows directly from their terminals, thereby minimizing disruptions. This update allows for streamlined processes without necessitating context switching between platforms. Unlike Google’s Gemini CLI tool that requires more iterative engagement, Jules is designed for specific tasks and operates independently once its plan is approved by the user.
Jules Tools now features a "memory" function to track user interactions and preferences, an improved diff viewer, and capabilities for managing comments on pull requests. Google is also expanding Jules' compatibility with various version control systems in response to user demand. Despite the advancements, challenges remain, particularly in mobile interactions, where native notifications are currently unsupported, although improvements are in progress.
Launched in public preview in May and transitioning out of beta in August, Jules primarily serves software engineers and is gaining traction among users in creative coding contexts. The service offers structured pricing tiers, including a free plan for up to 15 tasks daily, with paid subscriptions available for more extensive usage at $19.99 and $124.99 per month.
