Amazon buys Bee AI wearable that listens to everything you say
Amazon is acquiring Bee, a startup that uses AI to put AI on your wrist. Bee's $49.99 Fitbit-like device uses AI to transcribe conversations, generating personalized summaries of your days, reminders, and suggestions. Users can also give the device permission to access emails, contacts, location, reminders, photos, and calendar events to inform its AI-generated insights. Amazon's spokesperson, Alexandra Miller, says the company "cares deeply" about customer privacy and security and will work with Bee to give users "even greater control over" their devices when the deal closes. Amazon has been a strong steward of customer data since its founding and has never been in the business of selling customers' personal information to others. The terms of the deal are confidential, and all Bee employees have received offers to join Amazon.
Windows 11’s new update will add a bunch of AI features
Microsoft is introducing new AI features for Windows 11, including the Copilot Vision tool that can scan all screen content. These features are gradually rolling out to everyone, including tools exclusive to Copilot Plus PCs. Users can access Copilot Vision through the Copilot app, which uses AI to analyze content and ask questions about various apps and webpages. Snapdragon-powered Copilot Plus PCs can access an AI-powered "agent" within the Settings app, allowing users to search for specific settings with natural language. The AI-powered "Click to Do" preview is also more useful on Copilot Plus PCs, with new actions like reading fluency and pronunciation practice. Other features exclusive to Copilot Plus PCs include an AI-powered sticker generator in Paint, object select tool, AI lighting option in Photos, and a "perfect screenshot" tool within the Snipping Tool.
Proton is launching a privacy-focused AI chatbot
Proton, the company behind encrypted email service Proton Mail, has launched an AI chatbot called Lumo to preserve user privacy. Lumo can summarize documents, generate code, write emails, and more, while storing data locally on users' devices. Proton uses "zero-access" encryption to protect user data, preventing third parties from accessing it. The company also uses TLS encryption for data transmission and asymmetrically encrypts prompts, ensuring secure queries and responses during transit. Lumo can search the web but turns this feature off by default to give users maximum privacy. It can analyze uploaded files but doesn't save any information. Lumo is powered by several open-source large language models and can be accessed through the Lumo app for iOS and Android. Users can ask up to 25 questions per week and view encrypted chat histories.
